Escape

This month at Diverse Youth we are doing a series on “Escape”. Our nights will be focused on how at certain parts in our life we desire to escape from a moment, whether it be in our day to day life, our relationships, or maybe even our family.
Isn’t this whole idea of escape so relevant to our day to day lives? People everywhere are trying to escape something. Some people escape a mid-life crisis by buying a car, others may be trying to escape religion, others are trying to escape the law. I think at the core of everyone’s escape is the feeling that if I just escape this “thing” in my life I’ll be free.
Freedom is an interesting thought when it comes to this idea of “escape”. Some people may say that the reason they drink or do drugs is to “escape” it all. I imagine it’s true. I imagine for a moment or a few hours they are able to escape their situation, whatever that may be. But that “escape” only lasts till the next drink or hit. But isn’t the whole idea of escape to attain freedom, and if our idea of escape doesn’t result in freedom, then what do we do?
It’s interesting when I read the words of Jesus that an overwhelming amount of His time He offered people freedom. He offered the religious people of His time freedom from their religiousity. He offered freedom for the woman at the well. He offered freedom…It’s up to us to take Him up on His offer.
