Gold Medal Living

Posted on February 24, 2010 by Marlo Jenkins

I am loving watching the Olympics… except for last Sunday night’s hockey game. A few days ago as Miriam and I were watching, I said: “It would be awesome to compete at that level.” Then I woke up.

All of us have heard stories of Olympic athletes and what it takes to get to that level—the sacrifices, the years of preparation and training; the disciplined routines of rest, work, nutrition, etc. All to attain a prize that’s very exciting and commendable, but also is very temporaral. It has a temporary ‘shelf life’.

I sometimes wonder that if, as Christians, we took our “training” in growing as love-motivated disciples even half as seriously, what our world and our societies would be like; what our relationships and our marriages would be like; what our communities would be like; what my character would be like; what the depth of my Christian maturity would be?

That’s what our current Sunday morning series: ‘Gold Medal Living’ is all about. Last Sunday we talked about Faith. This Sunday, Encouragement. The following three weekends: Courage, Endurance, Looking Ahead. Simple, yes… but life-impacting Biblical concepts.
