The Gift of the ‘Church’

Posted on October 31, 2011 by Marlo Jenkins

Please don’t stop reading because of the title of this particular blog. I recognize there are many different connotations that come to people’s minds when they hear the word ‘church’. That word, for some people, carries baggage with it, mostly unwanted. That’s very sad and that reality deeply disappoints God, because sometimes those in leadership in local churches have not represented Christ very well.

Let me clarify, by the word “church” I do not mean denomination, or building, or organization. Biblically, the word is a reference to people. The church is people who have allegiance to Jesus Christ in common.

So why do I have this idea of “the gift of the church” on my mind? For numbers of reasons; however, there’s one I want to share with you. Actually, even better…you can listen to the “impact statements” that numbers of people from Eaglemont Church gave last Sunday in our morning gathering. It was our 5th anniversary as a church body, and I asked some people in our church family to talk about the impact of being part of this local church. I was deeply impacted, humbled, and very excited by what was expressed!

Maybe by listening to these stories you’ll find some hope that a group of Christ-followers can be a place where you can be loved and accepted. Maybe you will believe again that there are communities of people who, like you, are not perfect, but are willing to explore and experience what it means to live life in personal relationship with the God who created us and loves us deeply.
