The Basics

Posted on January 23, 2012 by Marlo Jenkins

In our Sunday gatherings we have been in a series for the past three Sundays called “The Basics”. We’ve talked about the Bible, prayer, and giving. Sounds quite basic…and this coming Sunday? ‘Jesus’ is our topic – can’t get more basic than that. It’s good to revisit the “basics” regularly in various areas of our lives.

In the professional football world, Vince Lombardi is a well-known name. He is the famous Green Bay Packer coach from the 1960’s. The name of the NFL championship trophy, given to the team who wins the Super Bowl, is called the ‘Lombardi Trophy”. Unfortunately, as of yesterday, the San Francisco 49ers won’t be the recipients of that trophy… this year!

Coach Lombardi’s well-known commitment to excellence coupled with his leadership and motivational skills resulted in the Green Bay Packers winning 5 championship titles in 7 years. Of the numerous coaching tenets that Lombardi held to, there are two that characterized his approach and contributed to his success: “Keep It Simple” & “Focus on Fundamentals”.

If that approach is important in football, it’s even more important in spiritual things – walking with Christ and growing in relationship with Him may not be easy, but it really is not that complicated. There are some things in the Bible that are difficult to understand, no doubt. But the basics about what it means to know God personally and walk in relationship with Him, through Christ, are really quite… well… basic! If you haven’t already, maybe it’s time you explored these things. We’d be most happy to help.
