The Basics
Posted on January 23, 2012 by Marlo Jenkins
In our Sunday gatherings we have been in a series for the past three Sundays called “The Basics”. We’ve talked about the Bible, prayer, and giving. Sounds quite basic…and this coming Sunday? ‘Jesus’ is our topic – can’t get more basic than that. It’s good to revisit the “basics” regularly in various areas of our lives. In the professional football world, Vince Lombardi is a well-known name. He is the famous Green Bay Packer coach from the 1960’s. The name of the NFL championship trophy, given to the team who wins the Super Bowl, is called the ‘Lombardi Trophy”. Unfortunately, ...

It’s been just over 2 weeks since deep shock and pain gripped our town because of the tragic loss of life that happened in one day. First, the loss of 3 young lives in a car accident and then later that same day the tragic and sudden passing of a deeply loved young adult in our community. I won’t even begin to compare the grief our family felt with the grief and pain the parents and family members of those who passed away felt and are continuing to feel, but ours has been significant. I have seen, in tragedy, how…

Please don’t stop reading because of the title of this particular blog. I recognize there are many different connotations that come to people’s minds when they hear the word ‘church’. That word, for some people, carries baggage with it, mostly unwanted. That’s very sad and that reality deeply disappoints God, because sometimes those in leadership in local churches have not represented Christ very well. Let me clarify, by the word “church” I do not mean denomination, or building, or organization. Biblically, the word is a reference to people. The church is people who have allegiance to Jesus Christ in common. ...

I was thinking about the feeling of freedom last evening after watching the news about Amanda Knox. You probably are aware of who she is – the young adult from Seattle who was in prison for 4 years in Italy during the court case relating to her charge of murder. She was found not guilty and returned home to the United States on October 4, 2011. Whether she is innocent or guilty, the feeling of freedom must be a good one for her. If she is in fact guilty, there will most certainly be a lack of freedom in…
For This I'm Grateful
Posted on July 14, 2011 by Marlo Jenkins
Two days ago Miriam and I drove our three teenagers (actually, I can’t say that anymore since our oldest turned 20 in June) to the airport and they left on a three-week missions trip to Ukraine with 18 other students and leaders from our church family. Certainly I miss them, but I am also very excited for them as they have this opportunity to serve in a cross-cultural situation. I have also been reflecting on the various influences in their lives over the years. The church, and by that I mean the body of Christ-followers that they have had opportunity…

I am so grateful for a Heavenly Father whom I know loves me unconditionally. Being loved by God, as father, is something that some people have a difficult time wrapping their head and hearts around because of the type of earthly father they had. That’s very sad. I’m also grateful for an earthly father who loved God deeply and loved me very much as well. What a great thing to be 47 years old (… please, let me finish the sentence), and never have had a doubt about my dad’s love for me. Certainly there were times when I know…

There’s no greater expression of love than someone dying for another. As we consider the message and meaning of the historical Easter story, we reflect, as Christians, on what Jesus Christ has done for us on the cross – Jesus stepped into a ‘train wreck’ for you and I. His death was not merely to display God’s love for us, although it did so very powerfully. His death and resurrection brought about something amazing and significant, namely, freedom for each one of us to come into a personal and eternal relationship with God, our Creator. This morning, I was reading…

Just thought I’d update you from my last blog on March 4th (wow, time flies). After I wrote that March 4th blog, later that afternoon I was returning to the church from an appointment and picked up a coffee at Tim’s. When I finished my medium coffee, I rolled up the rim and shouted, “I’m 1 for 20!” …for real! It was a ‘Win a Donut’! As of this morning, I am 5 for 63. I have absolutely no spiritual lesson to draw from what I just shared with you. However, I did want to mention to you that if…

I picked up my 19th Tim Horton’s “roll up the rim” cup of coffee this morning and enjoyed it as I worked in my office. I finished the last little sip with excitement because I had deceived myself into thinking that after purchasing 18 cups of coffee that the 19th cup would certainly yield me, if not the car or the barbecue, at least a cup of coffee or a measly donut. As I rolled up the rim and saw the word “please” (for you non-Tim Horton’s people, that’s the first word in the ‘dreaded’ three word encouragement to “please…

Our team of 10 returned home from Haiti close to midnight on February 10/11… deeply impacted and changed. People naturally ask the question, “How was your Haiti trip?” I struggle with putting what we experienced and what we saw into words that can come close to conveying the impact we felt. I can honestly say, it’s one thing to see it on TV, but it’s quite another to be there in person and experience the sights, sounds, and smells in person. We arrived at the Haiti Airport on February 2/11 to see the airport there still with broken windows, cracked…

On February 1, 2011, a group of 10 adults from Eaglemont Christian Church will leave Canada and fly to Haiti to serve children there. Our hosts are long-time missionaries Michel & Louise Charbonneau. You can see more about their good work in Haiti at www.haitiministries.com. Maybe you don’t, but in my busy life, I find it way too easy to forget about the majority of our world that lives in poverty and very difficult circumstances. If there was ever a country that has faced trouble and problems it is Haiti. The answer for that country is for the Haitian people…

Posted on October 11, 2010 by Marlo Jenkins
I love a good story. In our Sunday gatherings at Eaglemont Church, I love it when people are courageous and transparent enough to get up and share their story…or aspects of their story. Personal testimonies are powerful. There is something significant that happens when someone shares their experiences of challenge in life as well as their thoughts and feelings about how they were able to trust God in the midst of those difficulties. As Christ-followers, the experiences we go through are purposeful. If we respond well, God can use what we’ve gone through to be a huge encouragement to others. ...

I spent the better part of this past Saturday in an exciting and encouraging environment… at Shalom Waterski Park. I had the opportunity to be coached and encouraged toward the goal of “six competition buoys” at 29 miles an hour (I made five – I only say this so I don’t mis-represent that I reached the goal of ‘six’). Today my shoulder and lat muscles are so sore I can hardly feed myself. As enjoyable as that was for me, there’s something that excites me even more. It’s the encouragement, person to person, that can (and should) happen within the…

How much time do you spend thinking about Heaven? This week I have been thinking about heaven more than I normally do. I must admit, that’s because I’m speaking on the theme “Looking Ahead” this coming Sunday in our morning gathering. I have enjoyed thinking about it, not as an escape (although I am looking forward to possessing a body that will have no tendonitis), but as a place where I will be able to truly live as God originally intended each one of us to live… in perfect and intimate relationship with him. I am glad that heaven will…

I am loving watching the Olympics… except for last Sunday night’s hockey game. A few days ago as Miriam and I were watching, I said: “It would be awesome to compete at that level.” Then I woke up. All of us have heard stories of Olympic athletes and what it takes to get to that level—the sacrifices, the years of preparation and training; the disciplined routines of rest, work, nutrition, etc. All to attain a prize that’s very exciting and commendable, but also is very temporaral. It has a temporary ‘shelf life’. I sometimes wonder that if, as Christians, we…

“Divine conversation”... for some, that sounds quite unattainable. it’s really not – anyone can talk to God. When someone is honestly seeking, and wants to engage God in dialogue, God is all over that. In Jeremiah 33:3 (a book in the Old Testament of the Bible), God speaks through the prophet and says: “Call to me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things which you do not know.” That gets my attention! That’s God’s invitation to say, “Hey God, let’s talk.” Up to and including Sunday, February 7 we are going to be talking about…

I am celebrating my 47th Christmas season on this earth… I know, those of you who know me can’t believe that I have been around that long – ha! I have experienced Christmas in a variety of locations and in a variety of circumstances, which has resulted in a variety of memories – some good, some not so good. Some of the best Christmas memories we have as a family are the times when we found ways to serve others or to share with those in some type of need. We all know that giving is what it’s all about. ...

Over these last several weeks we have focused on the theme “God Is Closer Than You Think” in our Sunday gatherings and in our small groups. It has been very cool to see God do various things in people’s lives this fall. What a fantastic experience it was last Sunday morning to hear some of the good news reports. I love it when people are willing to open their lives to others and talk about the journey… we are all “further ahead” because of it! I love being a part of a healthy church body. There is something rejuvenating and…

… no really, you don’t understand… this is a “Big Deal” – I’m Blogging, as of this moment, for the first time in my life. Can’t you just feel the energy? As we launch our new website for Eaglemont Church, we also dive into a topic in our Sunday Gatherings & Small Groups (over the next six weeks) that really could revolutionize your perception of who God is and who he wants to be in relation to you. The title of this John Ortberg material, if true, is life-changing and eternity-altering: “God Is Closer Than You Think”! Many times, people’s…
