Blessing or Excess

Posted on April 17, 2012 by Ryan Salomons

I have been recently challenged in the area of what Christians would consider blessing. It’s an interesting bit of theology and the spectrum is broad. There are some Christians that believe God is hands off and our choices really determine our outcome. The opposite of that is that God is in on everything, like providing the parking space for you in the Sobeys lot. Like everything in life, it’s hard to maintain a balance. We tend to swing too far to the left then try to correct that by swinging too far to the right. Where is the balance in…

3 Things That Will Change Your Kids’ Character

Posted on February 24, 2012 by Ryan Salomons

Over the last years of youth ministry, I have had a lot of conversations with young people. Some really easy conversations, some really tough ones. Often the tough ones have one characteristic in them: defense. Youth want to defend their failure or wrongdoing with excuse layered upon excuse. But from where do they get this? Unfortunately, it’s a learned behaviour. The world around them teaches them to defend their actions rather than own them. As adults we must model our faults and failures in a way that teaches character that will grow them into successful adults. There are a couple…

Please Send Somebody Else

Posted on December 2, 2010 by Ryan Salomons

I have been reading through the book of Exodus in my devotions. If I’m honest with you, I have been feeling a little dry in my walk with God lately. I’m not usually one to use Christian lingo to communicate something, but it really has seemed like I have entered a time where spiritually, I’m thirsty. As I started to read the incredible story of Moses encountering God in such a real way, in a miraculous way through the episode of the burning bush recorded in Exodus 3, my mind is stuck on something Moses says to God in Chapter…

Back to Busy?

Posted on September 15, 2010 by Ryan Salomons

I imagine the fall brings different feelings for you. The summer is gone, students have started a new grade, kids have headed off to college, and work seems to require a whole lot more from you. The calmness of summer is met with the reality of fall like a head on collision and most of the time our soul bears the brunt of the impact. We become so busy we neglect the One who will get us through. As busy as we get, it can never replace time spent in the prescence of God. That can look very different for…

Somebody's Watching...Who Are You Following?

Posted on July 27, 2010 by Ryan Salomons

Somebody is always watching you. As a father of two young boys (2 1/2 yrs. & 11 months) I realize that they watch me like a hawk. So when my frustrations flare up like the 4th of July fireworks I realize they are watching me. Somebody is always watching my reactions to everything I do. As much as somebody is watching me, somebody is watching you. Whether it be your children, someone else’s children, a boss, a co-worker, somebody is always watching. If somebody is watching us, and they are, then who we follow matters the most. Who we are…

Escaping Realities

Posted on May 21, 2010 by Ryan Salomons

Last night I finally saw Slumdog Millionaire. If you like movies I know what you are thinking. And I also can’t believe it took me so long to see it. Last night was the first time I have ever watched a movie on Blu-ray, and it was awesome! My wife loves India. If you were to ask her where in the world she would want to go on an adventure, two countries would come to her mind, India being number one and close behind it Afghanistan. I’m not sure why those countries, but she finds tremendous beauty in the people…

I Choose Worship?

Posted on April 28, 2010 by Ryan Salomons

Last Week I had the opportunity to head off for a few days to the west coast with Marlo for a conference called Catalyst. It’s a conference designed for young leaders and focuses on becoming better leaders in ministry and life. There were great speakers, great music and a great atmosphere. One of the minor things that stuck out to me, was a sticker that was being handed out. Now, I’m not one for handouts or stickers but this one caught my attention. It simply stated “I Choose Worship.” I have heard that line before but as I thought about…

Escape

Posted on February 2, 2010 by Ryan Salomons

This month at Diverse Youth we are doing a series on “Escape”. Our nights will be focused on how at certain parts in our life we desire to escape from a moment, whether it be in our day to day life, our relationships, or maybe even our family. Isn’t this whole idea of escape so relevant to our day to day lives? People everywhere are trying to escape something. Some people escape a mid-life crisis by buying a car, others may be trying to escape religion, others are trying to escape the law. I think at the core of everyone’s…

Lest We Forget...

Posted on November 10, 2009 by Ryan Salomons

I was driving home this past lunch hour and thought about all the things I have to do this week. It’s going to be crazy but great. With Remembrance Day tomorrow I thought about all the things I could get done around my house. Then something dawned on me… I have forgotten the sacrifice so many people have made for my country and my freedoms. Have we become a nation that takes this for granted? I often look at the United States in this area and feel ashamed that we don’t take more time to honour our past and present…

The Start of New Things!

Posted on October 20, 2009 by Ryan Salomons

It was October 29th 2006, when I sat inside what we know as Eaglemont Christian Church aka ECC. Almost three years removed from that experience I can say that we have had a lot of changes around here. Which is something that I love about this place. It’s something that I love about this community. My honest assessment of the last three years is exploration. I have watched us explore what a genuine community could look like. Are we there? not by any means. All of us can grow in the area of being an active part of community. But, ...
